The science of horse chestnut seed extract has been emerging for more than 3 decades. In fact, horse chestnut has traditionally been used to treat patients with chronic venous insufficiency and to alleviate its associated symptoms, including lower leg swelling.
Veins return blood back to the heart. The veins located inside the legs return low oxygenated blood back to the heart and with age, these veins may weaken and stretch. When veins weaken and lose the ability to pump blood effectively, the condition is called chronic venous insufficiency. The symptoms include varicose veins, skin problems, leg and ankle swelling, tight calves, and legs that feel heavy, tired, restless, or achy.
In a review of patients with chronic venous insufficiency and a study in patients with varicose veins, horse chestnut seed extract was indeed effective for reducing lower leg edema and the alleviation of leg pain, heaviness, and itching. Another investigation compared the efficacy of edema reduction and safety of compression stockings and dried horse chestnut seed extract. It was discovered that a significant reduction in edema reductions was achieved by horse chestnut seed extract and compression. Furthermore, both horse chestnut seed extract and compression therapy was well tolerated and no serious treatment-related events were reported. Other studies further support the efficacy of this ingredient. For instance, within the framework of a case observation study involving general practitioners, data was collected from patients with chronic venous insufficiency that were treated with standardized horse chestnut extract and followed up at regular intervals. The evolution of the symptoms, tolerability and adverse drug reactions were recorded. All of the symptoms investigated such as pain, tiredness, tension and swelling in the leg, as well as itching and the tendency towards edema, etc. all improved markedly or disappeared completely. The results of this particular study show that rational treatment with horse chestnut extract represents an economical, practice-relevant therapeutic "pillar", which in comparison with compression has the additional advantage of better compliance.
A compound known as escin is found in horse chestnut extract, which appears to 'patch up' tiny leaks in blood vessels and capillaries, improving their health, strength and elasticity. Venastat's HC167® horse chestnut extract is standardized to 16.7% escin to provide a consistent level of relief in every capsule. This is the level of standardization used in numerous published clinical studies confirming safety and effectiveness.
Clearly, the scientific evidence shows that horse chestnut seed extract is effective as reference medications in alleviating the objective signs and subjec tive symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency. It thus represents a treatment option for chronic venous insufficiency that is worth considering.
